Disney Podcast Updates, July 1-15, 2010

There's a lot of patriotism and Michael Jackson in this set of updates (wow, I never thought I'd utter that sentence!). We also have to take a moment to say goodbye to one of the long-time running podcasts out there. We'll miss the banter and fun of All About The Mouse!!! 55 shows are included in this batch of updates, with some fantastic episodes out there! Oh, and starting with the August updates, I plan to add several more shows to the lineup. Enjoy!

If you are interested in listening to any of these episodes, I have links to subscribe for most of these shows in my post HERE. Also, if you're willing, you can help these shows out by posting a review over on iTunes. The more they get, the higher up they appear on searches. If you do start listening to a podcast as a result of what you've seen on here, please let the podcasters know!

As always, please note that this again is not a comprehensive list of the Disney Podcasts that are out there. Mike Hamilton has created Disneypodcastdirectory.net, which he periodically updates with new podcasts and removes dead casts. He also has the automated RSS (historical) feeds of the podcasts. This is more of a cross-section of what is currently being talked about…perhaps something may sound interesting, and you'll subscribe to listen to that topic.

Any and all comments are welcomed! Also, if you know of another podcast that fits here, let me know.

    • 07/06/10 – Episode 69, This show, we'll start off a morning in Dinoland, U.S.A., and we'll make the mistake of sitting in the same seat as LFFG on Triceratops Spin as well as investigate the real reason the dinosaurs became extinct on Dinosaur. Then, we'll head to the Magic Kingdom to watch Hall of Presidents with Mrs. Buckethead and LFFG. We then close out the show with a piece from my June band concert, Aaron Copeland's "Hoedown" from "Rodeo", which is featured in both Disneyland's Frontierland and in Disney's Wilderness Lodge. • 07/06/10 – Season 4, Episode 7,  Each week, in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record.  This week, from the 1980 Disneyland Record #2511 "Yankee Doodle Mickey"; have a listen to Mickey and the gang performing You're a Grand Old Flag and the Armed Forces Melody.  Listen carefully, that's Wayne Allwine as Mickey, three years before he officially inherited the roll from Jimmy McDonald in Mickey's Christmas Carol.   Yankee Doodle Mickey was given the CD treatment in 2002.  While several songs from the original LP were removed, at the time The American Adventure hosted an a capella group called, "American  Vybe";  Their studio rendition of America the Beautiful is featured here.  From the Walt Disney Archives:  In 2004 Leonard Maltin met with John Hench, at the time, Disney's longest-term employee, and discusses how after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Burbank studio was instantly turned into a base for the military.  Then, Walt's nephew recalls his boyhood memories of the Disney studio during the war and also touches on the Disney insignia's popularity and his own method of promoting Victory Through Air Power.  Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West.   This week we look into the making of and then take in the Magic Kingdom's Hall of Presidents.  With new narration by Morgan Freeman and a short speech by President Obama, this iteration of the attraction in a class by itself.  We'll close this week's show with a concert in the park performed by the Disneyland Band.  Enjoy, "Music in America" followed by the Flag Retreat Ceremony.  Please keep your head, arms, feet and legs inside the podcast at all times.  Driver you're clear!  Let's reflect on this holiday by heeding Walt Disney, who spoke the following words at the Metropolitan Opera house in New York City in 1941, as America tumbled into World War II:  "Tomorrow will be better. For as long as America keeps alive the ideas of freedom and a better life, all men will want to be free and share our way of life. I thank God and America for the right to live and raise my family under the flag of tolerance, democracy and freedom." (Mush: AWESOME show Gary…loved every minute of it!!!) Time: 1:43:47
    • 07/11/10, Episode 8 of Season 4, In 1963 Walt Disney Productions released the feature film Summer Magic, starring Hayley Mills, Burl Ives, and Dorothy McGuire in a story about a Boston widow and her children taking up residence in a small town in Maine. The film was based on the book "Mother Carey's Chickens" by Kate Douglas Wiggin.  The film was Mills' fourth of six films for Disney, and the young actress received a Golden Globe nomination for her work.  The soundtrack from the picture yielded some very good songs, including the Richard Sherman composition, the Ugly Bug Ball; which went on to be a popular song that year.  Two other cuts on the record however will be of interest to Disney Park fans.  Flitterin' and Beautiful Beulah can often be heard in instrumental form as you stroll down Main Street USA.  Now have a listen to these familiar melodies, complete with their original lyrics.  From the Walt Disney Archives:  On the evening of June 25th, D23 members gathered at the Walt Disney Theater on the Disney Studios lot in Burbank to witness a once in a lifetime event.  Dave Smith, Chief Archivist for the Walt Disney Company celebrated his and its 40th anniversary!  While tinged with just the slightest bit of sadness with the fresh reveal Dave will be retiring in October; the evening was a celebration in the truest sense.  Disney luminaries such as CEO Bob Iger, composer Richard Sherman, and Imagineers Tony Baxter and Bob Gurr, were in attendance.  Leonard Maltin interviewed Dave during the occasion.  We present the entirety of that interview here.  Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West.   This week, summer isn't complete without the rush of a roller coaster and fireworks.  In DCA's Paradise Pier, take a ride on California Screamin'!  Then, let's cross the esplanade and take in Magical!, Disney's Nightastic fireworks spectacular.  This is a Mouse Lounge Re-mix, so should be extra fun with the sounds of a very enthusiastic summer crowd in the background.  We'll close this week's show with audio from an attraction you can only see online.  Time: 1:41:09 (Mush: looks like this show appears back to back in the feed)
    • 07/14/10 – Episode 9 of Season 4, (Vidcast of TTA). This low key ride frequently tops the list of no-wait afternoon attractions when fuses are short and bodies are hot and worn out.  It's a ten minute refreshing breather with some incredible scenery along the way. We get to hear a stream of consciousness (which is often where some of the great parts of the shows come from!). The show wraps with a voice mail from regular fan Trish). Time: 1:30:38
    • 07/13/10 – Episode 70, Gordon actually records while he runs for the first time in forever (Mush: I tried keeping your pace by listening to this while running…epic fail on my part LOL). He reports on his ITBS, his cross training, his swimming (what?), yes, his swimming. He discusses how he started losing weight. Then he asks listeners to join him in celebrating one year (July 20) of reclaiming his health, by asking that they do him a favor! Time: 58:50

    • 07/06/10 – Episode 111, Un autre voyage cette semaine dans certaines audio parc – cette fois, Disneyland Paris! We'll heard park BRM for POTC (yeah, I was also smirking at the abbreviations), then a musical ride-thru of the Parisian POTC followed by the actual ride-thru, en francais. To kick off this celebration, we'll be dissecting Alien Encounter in honor of its 15th anniversary with one of our signature segments: "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". Following that, we have a rather "moving" installment of our Walt Disney World history segment, Back to the Future. In this week's trip through time, we'll be looking at the history of a revolutionary ride system that stunned the world at the 1964 World's Fair, defined a generation at Disneyland, and eventually advanced theme parks into a new era at Walt Disney World: the WEDway Peoplemover. We'll travel back to the beginning and see where this attraction has its roots planted, and travel all the way to today where it's know at the Tomorrowland Transit Authority, or more affectionately as the TTA. (Mush: I found myself laughing out loud a NUMBER of times in the Good/Bad/Ugly and the BTTF segments…awesome one-liners in there!!!) Time: 2:19:09

Time: 30:03

    • 07/03/10 – Episode 44, In this episode Matt and Nate are joined by Jeff Chaney, a blogger for wedwayradio.com and panelist for the BetaMouse to look at a favorite attraction from the early days of Epcot Center, The World of Motion.  This Future World East pavilion was sponsored by GM and has a few of the same components that we discussed in episode 43 of WEDway Radio where we explored the Ford Pavilion at the 1964 World's Fair, or The Magic Skyway.  When the World of Motion closed in 1996 it ended a tradition of Disney designed attractions based on history, technology and entertainment and gave way to the more thrill type attractions as it was replaced by Test Track.  The World of Motion is missed by many and we hope you will find this a fitting tribute. Enjoy! (Bruce Willis critical mass?? LMAO!!!! Great show to listen to, guys!). Time: 1:05:28

    • 07/08/10 – Episode 244, This week, Magic Joe returns to celebrate America with American Journeys & Disneyland's 30th Anniversary Parade. Then, after the show "ends" Paul adds a little "classic audio" of his own. This is a recording of America the Beautiful recorded LIVE at Disneyland just hours before the Annual Passholder (AP) Light Magic Premiere on May 13, 1997. I am not sure why this appears to be in mono, as I was using a stereo recorder... I guess I am just gonna have to see if I can find the ORIGINAL tape that I recorded the show onto... You know... I just wasn't planning for a podcast back 13 years ago... (Mush: still some great audio!) Time: 1:03:36
    • 07/15/10 – Episode 245, This week, Paul takes you back to Westfest 2010 for the final ride of the night. But before the final ride, comes a 2-pak of fun with Paul and a few of his friends. Time: 1:08:52
