2010 Poll of the Disney Podcasts!!!!

Well, folks, after the success of the inaugural contest where 492 people cast over 1,400 votes for nearly every Disney Podcast in the fall of 2009, I have decided to do another contest! Depending on how well this is received, hopefully, this will become an annual event for the Disneyana fans. Why do another one? Over the past year, we have had several new shows dedicated to the universe of Disney pop up on the horizon. Sadly, we've also seen the sun set on some long-running shows.  With a new mix of shows out there, along with the increasing popularity of podcasts, there may be some very different results from last year's contest.  By doing something like this where there is no nomination process to be included, it gives a chance for all the shows to be included and, hopefully, all will get some more listeners subscribed. It also gives the fans a chance to sound off on what they like. Besides, it increases the number of people who visit my blog (too bad I don't have ads on here).  This year I've listed as many as I could find, which comes out to somewhere between 60 and 65 podcasts!!!


 
Just like last year, this poll will remain open for an extended period of time – October 31^st is the deadline to submit your votes. You don't have to vote for a single favorite podcast – it's set up so you can select any number of shows that you regularly listen to and consider to be of good quality. I know that there's always the chance that people can log into multiple computers and vote several times for a particular show. To that I say "SO WHAT??!!!" We're not electing a lawmaker here (where, of course, we'll never see multiple ballot-casting). It's supposed to be fun…just remember that. Last year we saw some of that very thing…fun! A few of the podcast hosts got in on it and did some campaigning via the podcasts, twitter, show notes, etc…there was no mudslinging (though it may get interesting if the Disney Dudes are tied with Those Darn Cats in the final minutes). I'm toying with the idea of having campaign ads done via guest posts, but I'm a bit worried about polarization, finance reform, and debates on social security clogging up my inbox.

Disney Podcast Contest - Final Results!

Well, the campaigning is done…the babies are all kissed…the palms are greased…it's over.

What you see below are the final results of my first attempt at a poll on podcasts, and the results blew me away. I was going to be happy if I had 50-75 people vote. We just about made it to 500 people (492!!!!!). Thos 492 folks cast a total of 1,417 votes for podcasts that they listen to! We even had a new entry in the last week (DisFanReview!)

Lots of votes in the last week or so. WaltCast again led the way with 19 votes, followed closely by WDW Today (18), Running to Disney (16), and the WDW Radio Show (13). Be Our Guest nabbed another 7 votes, while Netcot, Inside the Magic, and Disneyland News Today each added 6 to their total. Some folks really lobbied for support, and hopefully they got some new listeners. Others didn't mention it at all. In fact, many of the top ten didn't mention the contest once and still received a large number of folks who said that they listen to their podcasts.

I feel bad for what happened to WTTM…because of a mistake on my part, it got left out of the original list. Because of that, I think it would have received at least another 30-40 votes. Sorry, Paul!

Thanks to everyone who took part in it…hopefully some of the newer shows got some listeners as a result of this, while those who may be looking for a podcast to listen to may have found a new one to call their own.

Last Day to Vote!!!

...and the world said "FINALLY!!!"


Yep, Tuesday, November 3rd, is the final day for you to vote for all those Disney podcasts you listen to. It has been going on for several months now and is a little different than your traditional contest. There were no nominations...pretty much every Disney podcast out there was included. Also, it wasn't a "vote for your favorite" format. You can vote for as many as you like! The goal is to just see what ones people listen to the most. Some of the hosts have had some fun with it, which was one of the goals. Hopefully it also got some of the newer podcasts a few new listeners too.


The polls close tonight, so get those last-minute lobbying efforts, annoying phone calls, incessant TV ads, and baby-kissing taken care of now!



To vote, just go to blogdumush.blogspot.com (if you're getting this via e-mail or RSS feed) and look at the right-hand side of the screen. You'll see the list of podcasts you can vote for. If you would like to vote for one not listed (or listed on top but not "votable"), just send me an e-mail with your additional votes. I'll send you a confirmation that I've added them. Were within range of 500 voters...I don't know it we'll make it to that landmark or not, but we're close.

Only Two Weeks Left!

Okay, folks, here's where we currently are with the podcast contest. I had planned on getting more updates with this, but it had to take a back burner to that thing called life. We've seen a few big movers over the past (I hate saying this) 50 days. The Travelears podcast has climbed up 5 spots, and WEDWay Radio has jumped up 6. The big mover, again, is Waltcast – with 33 additional votes (only WDW Today had more votes in that time frame), Waltcast has rocketed up an very impressive 23 positions!

Matt, Mike, Mike, Len, and Annette still hold the top spot, while Gordon's runners maintain second place. Lou's Box People are still out in force, adding 17 votes and holding on to third place. Mike, Rikki, Debbie, and Pam are in a fierce battle with Ricky's Inside the Magic for 4^th place, and Van, while still in the 5^th position, has closed the gap significantly. Eric, Cathy, and Dan from Mouse Guest are holding on to the next spot, with Bryan and Jonathan's AllAboutTheMouseketeers inching closer to moving up a notch. Shawn and Katie's surge now has them in the top ten, bumping Dis Unplugged down to 10^th and Tom Corliss and the WDWNT crew down to 11^th, though they are really close to getting back in. The podcasts are really grouped up after that. Only 14 votes separate spots 11-23.

Remember, I'm not asking you to vote for your single favorite podcast…I'm asking for what ones you listen to on a regular basis. This means that you can vote for more than one podcast. Luckily, this poll is set up so that you can go back and change your vote if you'd like to. Current Standings After 3 Weeks of Voting:

Well, folks, here we are on the 21^st day of the voting, and the numbers are still coming in. As expected, they have slowed down significantly over the past week or so, but there are still a few votes cast each day. We've had some big movers in the past couple of weeks. WEDWay Radio has moved up 6 positions. Not to be outdone, Magic City Mayhem has jumped 11 spots. The biggest mover, however? One of the newest podcasts out there (the 5^th episode of the show was just released in the past few days)… Shawn and Katie over at the WaltCast have jumped 15 positions!!!

Below are the current rankings as of Sunday, August 30, 2009. WDW Today remains atop the board for the time being, with Running to Disney holding fast at second (both the Disney fans and the Running fans remain mobilized in the voting), and Lou's WDW Radio Show at #3. Be Our Guest remains in 4^th, as do Inside the Magic in 5^th and Van's Netcot Podcast in 6^th. Mouseguest has broken the tie they previously had with All About the Mouse and has moved into sole possession of 7^th position and AATM at 8^th. The podcast of the DISboards is still in the same position at 9^th, and WDW News Today rounds out the Top Ten, though WDWNT is inching closer to taking that spot from DIS Unplugged.

As you can see below, the 10^th position currently holding 32 votes. This leads to an interesting finding here: with the majority of the remaining podcasts bunched together and narrowly separated by a small margin of listeners who have voted, it won't take much for most podcasts to make some really large moves up the list. For example, it takes only 20 more people voting to move someone currently residing in the 25^th position up and into the Top Ten!

After One Week of Voting...

...we are already nearing 1,000 votes! 259 people have submitted 921 votes for the Disney podcasts that they listen to. I've been lurking on a few of the forums and blogs that support these shows, and it's really fun to watch the loyalties and rivalries start to form. It's really interesting to see the votes as they come in, too, because I can usually tell which podcast has a fan post something somewhere as a decent bump in the numbers usually follows soon after.


Probably the thing I've heard the most is something along the lines of, "I had no idea there were so many podcasts out there relating to Disney!!!" The second-most often heard item is, "I'm surprised at who's Leading/in the Top 5!!"

There are a couple of items that I think need to be pointed out: First, EVERY podcast has at least one vote (and, no, I didn't give everyone a vote to start out...those are legitimate). Second...I think most people are expecting the mega-popular shows (WDW Radio, WDW Today, Inside the Magic, etc) to be up at the top, but, if you notice, sitting in at #3 is a relatively new show that a lot of folks don't know about...Running to Disney, and right below it is Be Our Guest, who by its own accord considers itself a "smaller" show (Source: hosts, episode 149, about 5:10 in...not my words...theirs :) ). I know that those two have done a little campaigning in the first week, and it appears to have paid off so far. As other podcasts campaign for votes, I'm fairly confident the Top Ten will change, and I think it will change rather quickly.

Okay, Folks...We're Going to Have a Friendly Little Podcast Contest Here...

Over the past several months, I've been doing the updates for the Disney-related podcasts on here. While I haven't been as successful as I was hoping to be in trying to do a weekly update, I've been plugging away and trying not to miss any episodes, all the while adding new podcasts to the list. I've been watching the Feedjit feed and have seen the occasional new reader click on all the links, so the updates are pretty much doing what I had hoped for them to do...provide the updates for episodes with a little bit of detail (and perhaps occasional humor), have the web searches find them, and get people to check out and hopefully become regular listeners to new shows that they might otherwise not try.



To those shows that promoted this blog when I first sent out an e-mail inquiry for your podcast to be included...I wanted to say a heartfelt "Thanks!" While I wasn't intending the e-mails to be read on air, it was actually a little funny to hear the same basic letter read on different podcasts about 20 times (making it sound like I'm even more conceited than I already am). Those that follow multiple podcasts probably got sick of that letter!



As I listen to the shows every week (and yes, I do listen to the majority of them...on the rare occasion I skim or just look at the show notes), I get curious as to what the most popular Disney podcast out there is. I decided that I've got a decent list...I've got Twitter...I've got Facebook...WHAT THE HECK...LET'S TRY IT! I don't know if this has been done before, but this again can help the podcasts potentially get some new listeners...especially some of the newer ones that get a few votes.



For those getting this via e-mail, RSS feed, aggregator, reader, etc, you'll have to head over to the actual URL to vote. That's at http://blogdumush.blogspot.com. The poll is on the right-hand side of the page, part-way down. For those wondering, yes, I have included some of the podcasts that I don't follow on the blog. I know the list still isn't completely inclusive, but, to make sure any that I've missed aren't left out, I've included a selection for "Other" with the request to e-mail me the name of any show that I don't have listed so they can be counted. I'll occasionally provide a blog post with a current tally that includes podcasts that I've missed.


To accommodate for those podcasts that are more intermittent in their releases or follow a monthly/bi-monthly release, I'm going to have this poll up until November 3rd (when a normal election day in the U.S. would be). That's nearly 3 months to drum up votes.


Now...as for what is meant by "regularly" listening to...this isn't a publishable methodology! If you've listened to more than one episode of a podcast and like it, count it! It's not like I'm hiring a bunch of surveyors to canvass the country with a solid instrument of data collection...it's for fun! Oh, and the prize for being the "most popular"???? The winner receives the knowledge that more people get to hear your screw-ups than anyone else's!!!



Again, have fun with it...that's the main point. One of the things that I've noticed as I've listened to the various shows out there is that the Disney podcasting community seems to get along really well together, with people filling in on other casts, sitting in as guests, making fun of each other in a friendly, almost sibling-like way, promoting each others' shows on their own podcasts, and more! The cooperation among these podcasts makes them all better, and I applaud the comraderie that we hear with each download.



This idea may go absolutely nowhere, or it may take off like crazy...I don't know. If it fails miserably, no problem...it was just an idea I came up with (no, I don't have any ad revenue on the blog, so I'm not trying to increase readership). If it gets really popular, then GREAT!!! I hope the podcasters and the listeners have fun with this (sound familiar?). If you want to e-mail me with a speech on why people should vote for a particular podcast, go for it. (It will help me actually get more material posted on this thing as I am woefully behind in updating the blog.) If you want to create bumper stickers and buttons with "VOTE FOR ______(insert podcast)!" on it, go for it! If you want to promote this on your podcast, go for it!!! (just please paraphrase this instead of reading the whole thing...I don't want to lose the 30 readers I have). If you want to challenge another podcast to a debate in a town hall meeting format, well, you're on your own.
